Lore & Background

Victor Saltzpyre was born into a noble family in the Empire, but his life took a dark turn when a Chaos cult corrupted his household, leading to the death of his parents. This tragedy forged him into a Witch Hunter, a fanatical servant of Sigmar who sees heresy and mutation everywhere. He joined the Order of the Silver Hammer, where his zeal and ruthlessness earned him a reputation as one of their most effective—and feared—agents. His methods are brutal, often involving torture and summary execution, but he believes that only through absolute purity can the Empire survive the encroaching darkness.

In the Ubersreik campaign, Saltzpyre was dispatched to investigate Skaven activity, only to find himself thrown together with a mismatched group of survivors. Despite his disdain for their lack of faith and discipline, he grudgingly acknowledges their effectiveness in battle. His faith is his anchor, but it also blinds him to nuance, making him quick to judge and slow to trust. He carries a deep-seated guilt over his past failures, which fuels his obsessive hunt for the corrupt.

In Their Own Story

The rain fell in sheets over the ruins of Ubersreik, washing blood from the cobblestones. Victor Saltzpyre knelt beside a fallen Skaven, its body still twitching. He pressed his thumb to its forehead, muttering a prayer to Sigmar. 'You are nothing but filth,' he whispered, 'and filth must be cleansed.' He stood, his coat heavy with water, and scanned the shadows. Somewhere in the dark, a horn sounded—the call of the Rotbloods. He smiled grimly, drawing his rapier. 'Come then. Sigmar awaits your judgment.'

Reader's Guide

Victor Saltzpyre is a versatile melee-ranged hybrid in Vermintide 2, excelling at headshots and elite elimination. His career options—Witch Hunter Captain, Bounty Hunter, and Zealot—allow for different playstyles: support with tagging and crit boosts, ranged burst damage, or a fanatical melee tank. He pairs well with ranged-focused allies like Kerillian or Sienna, as his rapier and pistols let him cover mid-range threats. His unique mechanic, 'Sigmar's Judgment,' rewards precise timing and positioning. Lore-wise, Saltzpyre stands apart from generic Witch Hunters by his personal tragedy and his complex relationship with the other heroes—he respects Kruber's soldierly discipline, distrusts Bardin's grudges, and is openly hostile to Sienna's magic, though he tolerates her as a necessary evil. His faith is both his strength and his flaw, making him a compelling figure in the End Times narrative.
