Gutter Runner
From shadow, death strikes without warning—and without mercy.
Gutter Runners are the silent, deadly assassins of the Skaven under-empire, the elite killers of Clan Eshin. In Warhammer: Vermintide, these wiry ratmen haunt the shadows of the Ubersreik countryside, striking with terrifying speed and precision to gut isolated heroes. Their role in the campaign is as a special enemy that punishes straying players, forcing teams to stay tight and stay sharp against their sudden, leaping ambushes.

Lore & Background
Gutter Runners are the product of Clan Eshin's centuries of refinement in the arts of stealth and murder. Trained from birth in the harsh, shadowy warrens of their clan's territory, they learn to move without sound, to climb sheer surfaces with unnatural ease, and to deliver a single, lethal blow from a poisoned blade. Their loyalty is to their clan and their contracts, not to any broader Skaven cause, making them unpredictable even among their own kind.
In the Vermintide, these assassins are often deployed to disrupt the heroes' formations, targeting healers or ranged fighters before melting back into the darkness. Their presence is announced only by a faint hiss or the rustle of cloth, and a successful dodge or block is often the only warning before a Gutter Runner pounces, pinning its victim to the ground for a fatal strike. The heroes have learned to listen for the telltale sound of their approach and to watch the ledges and rooftops where they lurk.
Their armor is light, favoring mobility over protection, and their weapons are coated with a fast-acting poison that can fell even the toughest warrior. Despite their fragile appearance, their speed and cunning make them one of the most feared enemies in the Skaven arsenal, and a single Gutter Runner can turn a desperate fight into a massacre if left unchecked.
In Their Own Story
The rain fell in sheets, drowning the city in gray noise. Kruber wiped water from his eyes, scanning the rooftops. A flicker of movement—nothing more than a shadow against the dark sky. He raised his halberd, but too late. A weight slammed into his back, claws digging into his pauldron, and a cold blade pressed against his throat. The Gutter Runner's breath was hot and rank in his ear. 'Yes-yes, man-thing dies now,' it hissed. With a roar, Kruber threw himself backward, crushing the rat against a stone wall. The blade clattered away, and the assassin scrambled into the night, leaving only a smear of blood and the lingering stench of fear.
Reader's Guide
Gutter Runners are one of the most dangerous special enemies in Vermintide 2: agile assassins that leap onto players from range, pinning them and dealing rapid, stacking damage. If they were playable, their style would revolve around high mobility, stealth, and single-target elimination—think hit-and-run terror. In the campaign, they are a priority target that must be killed quickly before they close the distance.
Key counters include characters with high awareness and crowd control, such as Kerillian's Waystalker or Saltzpyre's Bounty Hunter, who can snipe them mid-leap. Their lore distinguishes them from other Skaven by their near-total independence; they answer only to Clan Eshin contracts, not to any warlord's whims. This makes them unpredictable even among their own kind—a Gutter Runner might abandon a battle if the odds turn, or press an attack with suicidal zeal if the bounty is high enough.
