Packmaster

The hook that drags you screaming into the dark.

The Packmaster is a loathsome Skaven Warlock Engineer who serves as a special enemy unit in the Ubersreik campaigns of Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Clad in rusted iron and reeking of warpstone fumes, these ratmen wield a hooked polearm known as a 'gutter rod' to snare heroes from a distance, dragging them into the horde for a gruesome death. Their role is to disrupt and isolate the party, forcing players to prioritize their elimination or risk losing a teammate to the swarm.

Lore & Background

Packmasters are the product of Clan Skryre's relentless pursuit of mechanical cruelty. Unlike the brute force of Rat Ogres or the cunning of Gutter Runners, these engineers specialize in capture—using their warpstone-tipped poles to ensnare victims from afar. They are often found leading packs of Slave Rats, directing the chaff with sharp whistles and crackling shocks from their weapons. In the under-empire, they are feared even by their own kind, as a Packmaster's loyalty is to the machine and the warpstone that fuels it, not to clan or kin.

In Their Own Story

The stench of ozone and filth preceded the shriek of metal. Kruber heard it a heartbeat too late—a barbed hook punched through his pauldron, yanking him off his feet. He crashed through a stack of crates, the world a blur of stone and shadow, until he slammed against a rusted cage. The Packmaster's yellow eyes gleamed in the dark, its breath a wet rattle as it cranked a winch. 'Yes-yes, man-thing caught!' it chittered, raising a crackling rod. Kruber spat blood and gripped his sword—if he could just reach the latch before the rats came... He'd seen a comrade dragged away before. The cage door slammed shut. The screaming stopped. Then the feast began.

Reader's Guide

The Packmaster is a special enemy that appears in Vermintide 2 as a disabler, using a hooked polearm to snare a hero from range and drag them toward a pre-placed cage or pit. Unlike the Leech or Assassin, the Packmaster's hook is a projectile that can be dodged—but once it lands, the pull is relentless. Players must prioritize breaking the hook by dealing damage to the Packmaster, or free the grabbed ally with melee attacks. The Packmaster is often accompanied by a small horde, making it a dangerous distraction during horde waves. Its weakness is its slow movement while dragging—a well-timed bomb or ranged burst can save a teammate. Lore-wise, Packmasters are distinct from generic Skaven Warlock Engineers due to their specialized capture role, reflecting Clan Skryre's focus on experimental weaponry. They are not playable, but their mechanics emphasize teamwork and positioning: if you hear the hook's metallic screech, dodge sideways and call out its location—your friend's life depends on it.
