The Wood Elves
Silent arrows in the darkening woods—guardians of a green world that refuses to die.
The Wood Elves, also known as Asurians, are an ancient and fiercely reclusive race of elves who have guarded the great forests of the Old World since before the rise of most mortal civilizations. Their domain, the vast and ever-shifting woodland of Athel Loren, is a place where the boundary between the natural world and raw magical force is thin, and where the trees themselves seem to breathe with old, green purpose. In the Warhammer Vermintide saga, the Wood Elves make a rare and consequential appearance: they set aside their long tradition of isolation to join the desperate, multi-race resistance against the Chaos incursion that threatens to devour the world.

Lore & Background
The Wood Elves are among the oldest sentient peoples of the Old World, their history stretching back to an age before the current shape of the land was fixed. They are a slender, long-lived race with an intimate bond to the forests they inhabit; their cities are grown rather than built, their magic drawn from the living green rather than from arcane formulae. They value the wild above all else and view the encroachment of industry, war, and the corruption of Chaos as a personal affront to the natural order that sustains them. Their greatest and most bitter rivalry is with the Dark Elves, the Druchii, who were once part of the same elven lineage before a schism tore the race apart. The War in the Shadows, as the Wood Elves call it, has raged for countless centuries across the hidden woodlands, a conflict of ambush, poison, and shadow that the wider world barely perceives. This ancient feud shapes every Wood Elf's understanding of duty: to protect the forest is to protect the last remnant of an uncorrupted world. The Wood Elves are not a people of large armies or grand political alliances. They move in small, silent bands through their woodlands, striking with devastating accuracy from behind the cover of leaves and mist. Their archery is legendary, their blades quick and precise, and their shamans channel the raw vitality of the forest into spells of growth, binding, and retribution. Yet they are also proud, suspicious of outsiders, and slow to trust. When they do choose to march beyond their borders, the world had best pay attention.
In Their Own Story
The rain had not stopped for three days, and the canopy of Athel Loren wept silver threads into the undergrowth. Eirlys stood at the edge of the clearing where the human and dwarf refugees had made their camp, her bow unstrung across her back, her green cloak heavy with water. She watched them through the mist—small, loud, clumsy creatures who smelled of iron and fear. They had begged for passage through the forest, and the Elders had debated for a full day before granting it. A day. For a people who measured time in the slow turning of seasons, a day was an eternity of compromise. A twig snapped. Not in the undergrowth—above, in the high branches where the light barely reached. Eirlys's hand found her bow before thought caught up, and the string sang with a sound like a whispered name. The thing that dropped was not a Dark Elf. It was a creature of rusted iron and weeping sores, its limbs twisted into claws that scrabbled against the bark. It landed on the wet leaves with a wet thud, and then another followed, and another. The humans cried out—clumsy, loud, afraid. Eirlys drew a second arrow. She had not come here to save them. She had come because the forest had told her, in the creak of old roots and the murmur of running water, that if this world fell, Athel Loren would fall next. And so she drew, and loosed, and the first beast crumpled with a shriek that cut through the rain. The Wardens of the Wood do not fight for thrones or gold. They fight so that the green places might still have a tomorrow.
Reader's Guide
ATHEL LOREN is the great forest that serves as the Wood Elves' homeland. In Vermintide, it functions as both a setting and a symbol: the last stretch of truly wild, magical land in an Old World being strangled by Chaos. If you encountered forest-based encounters or nature-themed environmental hazards in the campaign, those draw directly on Athel Loren's reputation as a place where the boundary between the physical and the magical is permeable. EIRLYS, the playable Wood Elf in Vermintide 2, represents the faction's reluctant involvement in the wider conflict. In established Warhammer Fantasy lore, Wood Elves are notoriously isolationist and rarely, if ever, form alliances with human or dwarven powers. Vermintide's narrative compresses this: the scale of the Chaos threat is portrayed as so absolute that even the most reclusive factions are forced to set aside ancient grudges. This is a deliberate dramatic choice by the game's writers rather than a reflection of a specific historical alliance in the tabletop setting. THE WAR IN THE SHADOWS refers to the millennia-long conflict between Wood Elves and Dark Elves (Druchii). Any dialogue in Vermintide referencing elven feuds, shadow ambushes, or rival elven factions is pointing to this conflict. It is distinct from the Chaos War and has its own internal logic, politics, and geography within the hidden woodlands. NATURE MAGIC, as used by Wood Elf characters, is thematically tied to the living forest rather than to the structured arcane traditions of, say, the Empire's wizards. In-game abilities that involve growth, binding, or elemental force echo this distinction. If item descriptions reference 'living wood' or 'green fire,' they are invoking this specific magical tradition rather than generic elemental magic.
