Ussingen

A quiet mountain village, now a silent grave.

Ussingen is a forgotten splinter of the Empire, a tiny village of timber and thatch wedged into a nameless valley in the Grey Mountains. No grand roads lead here, no elector counts know its name—only the wind, the rain, and the hungry things that crawl from the dark. In Vermintide, it is the first place the Ubersreik Five find already dead, a mute witness to the Skaven tide that washed over it before the heroes could even draw breath.

Lore & Background

Ussingen was never written into any imperial chronicle. Its people—farmers, herders, woodcutters—lived and died by the seasons, their only monument a weather-worn shrine to Sigmar that stood at the crossroads. They knew the threat of beastmen and goblins from the peaks, and kept a militia of thirty spears ready. But no one had ever seen the Skaven. When the ratmen erupted from tunnels beneath the very fields the villagers had tilled for generations, there was no warning, no battle cry—only screams swallowed by the mud. The trade route that once brought salt and iron now carries only the stench of warpstone and rot.

In Their Own Story

The rain fell in sheets as the five heroes crested the ridge, their torches sputtering against the gloom. Below, Ussingen lay still, too still. No smoke rose from its chimneys, no dogs barked. The only sound was the drip of water from eaves and the scuttling of unseen things. Bardin spat. 'They were here,' he said, his voice low. 'And they're still here.' As they descended into the village, the first ratmen burst from a shattered door, eyes gleaming in the dark. The fight was short, brutal, and all too familiar. Ussingen was already dead; they were just walking through its corpse.

Reader's Guide

In Vermintide 2, Ussingen is a rain-swept, muddy village of timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, now choked with debris and the bodies of its inhabitants. The sky is perpetually overcast, casting a grey pallor over the scene. The environment is claustrophobic, with narrow alleys and collapsed buildings forcing close-quarters combat. The village is swarming with Skaven, particularly Clanrats and Stormvermin, but also features special enemies like Gutter Runners and Packmasters that use the verticality and shadows to ambush players. Environmental hazards include burning houses that block paths and create areas of damage, as well as collapsing structures that can crush unwary heroes. The mission 'Into the Nest' begins here, as the party fights through Ussingen to reach the Skaven tunnel entrance. What makes Ussingen distinct is its tragic, mundane horror—it is not a fortress or a battlefield, but a home that was torn apart, making every broken doll and overturned cart a reminder of the lives lost.
